VACRAO’S Annual Professional Development Scholarship

Established in 2012, VACRAO’s Professional Development Scholarship offers financial support to VACRAO members for two professional scholarships to be given annually. One individual member (applicant) will be selected to attend (a) SACRAO, and one individual member (applicant) will be selected to attend (b) AACARO, allowing VACRAO members greater exposure to regional and national conferences, as well as, significant opportunity for professional development. By providing this opportunity to its membership, VACRAO also hopes to foster a stronger leadership presence within VACRAO’s executive committee and associated governance roles. Upon returning from the selected conference, VACRAO will encourage the scholarship award winner to bring forth a session idea/presentation for VACRAO’s annual conference, allowing our membership to be more aware of pertinent issues that exist both regionally, as well as, nationally.

Eligibility- The eligibility requirements include:
• The applicant must be employed by an institution who holds a current VACRAO membership
• The applicant must be a current full-time employee with their fellow institution in either the Admissions or Registrar’s Office.
• Applicant has been employed in their respective office for at least 1 year.
• Applicants who meet all requirements are eligible to apply for the scholarship & must adhere to the scholarship application deadline.
• Awards will not exceed $1500.00
• Scholarship amounts are to be used for the following: registration fees, travel and or lodging reimbursements

How to Become a Member

VACRAO Membership is going green this year!

Invoice will be available on-line this weekend.

On Friday, institutions’ Primary Contacts will receive instructions, usernames, and passwords for easy access to the 2013 Invoice. Watch your email and make sure your primary contact gets the information.

New memberships will also be accepted in early February.

Membership dues are $100 for the January 1 – December 31 calendar year. Dues cannot be prorated. Dues can only be accepted in the form of a check, made payable to “VACRAO”. Electronic transfers and credit card payments cannot be processed. The VACRAO membership application must be included with the payment.

Membership is contingent upon approval of the VACRAO Executive Board.

VACRAO membership is institutional. Voting member institutions may list up to eight members for the annual fee while associate and corporate
memberships may list two members for the annual fee. All members are listed in the VACRAO annual directory.

Membership Categories

Voting Members – Institutions of higher education may be considered for regular institutional membership if their central offices are located within the
Commonwealth of Virginia and they are approved to award degrees by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. Each institution may designate up to eight voting members for an annual fee of $100 and may designate additional voting members for an additional annual per-member fee. Each voting member in good standing and present at the annual meeting shall be entitled to one vote in all matters coming before the membership.

Associate Members – Institutions that are not eligible for voting membership but that have purposes parallel with or related to those of VACRAO may be considered for associate membership. Institutions of higher education whose central offices are located outside the Commonwealth of Virginia or are not approved to award degrees by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, non-collegiate organizations, and others approved by the Executive Committee are eligible to join as Associate Members. Each associate member may designate two individual members for an annual fee of $100. This membership is institutional and non-voting.

Corporate Members – Corporate membership is available to those organizations that provide products and services that assist and benefit Association members in carrying out their duties and responsibilities. Each corporate member may designate two individual members for an annual fee of $375. Benefits include one registration and exhibit space at the annual meeting, one set of mailing labels of the membership, and opportunities for advertisements. This membership is non-voting.

Individual Members – Individuals not eligible for voting or associate membership but who would benefit by participating in Association activities and receiving Association literature may be recommended for individual membership by a voting member. This membership is non-voting.

While the individual fairs are organized by local school districts, VACRAO assists in scheduling, publicity, set-up, and the dissemination of program details to its membership. The School and College Relations Committee works closely with high school counselors and community colleges to coordinate mutually-convenient programs. The schedule of college day and night programs includes some 75 individual fairs a year, and blanket the state of Virginia over eight weeks from September to November. The result provides every student within the state the opportunity to attend a fair in his or her region, and every VACRAO member the ability to effectively recruit in Virginia. Participation in the Virginia Tour is one of the primary benefits of VACRAO membership.

VACRAO’s Goals

• Emphasize the importance and benefits of learning for all in higher education.
• Support VACRAO members and support staff with career and professional development through a forum of statewide workshops, newsletters, as well as an annual state meeting.
• Provide exchanges of ideas and information by attending regional and national meetings, including SACRAO and AACRAO.
• Encourage research in the field of education through articles and projects submitted through the newsletter or through the Jean Rayburn Research Scholarship.
• Recognize leadership and contributions to VACRAO by members and others through the following: Honorary Memberships, Certificates of Appreciation, New Professionals Awards, and Distinguished Service Awards.
• Cooperate with and attend annual meetings of other organizations (e.g., VASFAA, SCHEV, SACRAO, AACRAO, PCACAC, NACAC, VACBC) in order to reach association goals.
• Conduct the Virginia Tour, a detailed recruiting schedule for Virginia.
